Gum disease is one of the most common oral health problems in society. Starting with symptoms such as gum bleeding, swelling, and redness, this disease can progress to tooth loss if left untreated. With early diagnosis and proper treatment, it can be fully controlled.
What Is Gum Disease?
Gum diseases are infectious processes caused by bacterial plaque. They are evaluated in two main stages: gingivitis, or gum inflammation, and periodontitis, or advanced gum disease. In the gingivitis stage, the damage is reversible; in periodontitis, bone loss begins.
Symptoms of Gum Disease
Gum bleeding is the most obvious early warning sign. Other symptoms include:
- Bleeding while brushing or flossing
- Redness and swelling of the gums
- Gum recession and teeth appearing longer
- Bad breath, also known as halitosis
- Loose teeth
- Pain or sensitivity while chewing
Causes of Gum Disease
Poor oral hygiene is the main cause. In addition, smoking, hormonal changes such as pregnancy and menopause, diabetes, genetic predisposition, and certain medications increase the risk of gum disease. Irregular dental check-ups also create a basis for disease progression.
Treatment Methods
Treatment for gum disease varies depending on the stage of the disease:
- Professional dental cleaning: Sufficient in the gingivitis stage
- Curettage, or deep cleaning: Cleaning of periodontal pockets
- Flap surgery: Surgical intervention in advanced cases
- Bone grafting: Reconstruction of lost bone
- Laser treatment: Bacterial elimination with a minimally invasive approach
Prevention
To prevent gum disease, brushing twice a day, using dental floss daily, quitting smoking, and having regular dental check-ups every 6 months are essential. A balanced diet and adequate vitamin C intake also support gum health.
