What to Do for a Decayed Tooth? Treatment Options and Prevention

What are the treatment options for tooth decay? Learn about the stages of dental cavities, treatment methods, and ways to prevent decay.

What to Do for a Decayed Tooth? Treatment Options and Prevention

Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic diseases in the world. Treatment for a decayed tooth depends on the stage and size of the cavity. While a simple filling may be enough at an early stage, root canal treatment or extraction may be required in advanced cases.

How Does Tooth Decay Form?

Bacteria in the mouth feed on food residues and produce acid. These acids wear down tooth enamel and initiate the formation of cavities. Poor oral hygiene, a sugary diet, dry mouth, and irregular dental check-ups are the main factors that increase the risk of tooth decay.

Stages of Tooth Decay

  • Enamel decay: The initial stage, seen as a white spot. It may be reversible with fluoride treatment.
  • Dentin decay: The cavity has reached the dentin layer beneath the enamel. Filling treatment is required.
  • Pulp, or nerve involvement: The decay has reached the nerve tissue of the tooth. Root canal treatment is required.
  • Abscess formation: The infection has spread to the root tip. Urgent treatment is essential.

Treatment Options for a Decayed Tooth

Treatment for a decayed tooth is planned according to the size of the cavity:

  • Fluoride application: Effective for very early-stage enamel decay
  • Composite filling: The most common treatment method, using tooth-colored aesthetic filling material
  • Inlay/Onlay: Porcelain restorations produced in a laboratory for large cavities
  • Root canal treatment: In cavities that have reached the nerve, the nerve tissue is cleaned and the tooth is saved
  • Crown: Zirconium or porcelain crown to protect the tooth after root canal treatment
  • Extraction: The last resort for teeth that cannot be saved

Prevention of Tooth Decay

Preventing decay is always better than treating it. Basic prevention methods include:

  • Brushing at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Using dental floss daily
  • Limiting sugary snacks
  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Dental check-ups and cleaning every 6 months
  • Fissure sealant application in children
